Upcoming Hurricane Conferences
By Daniel Neal

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and the Gulf Coast Emergency Management Officials are hosting the Second Annual Mississippi Hurricane Conference in late May.  The conference is focused upon first responders, members of the emergency management conference, and private and volunteer organizations.  "In short, anyone who is involved in planning for, responding to, or recovering from hurricanes should attend."
The Conference will take place in May 20 through May 22nd at the Palace Casino and Conference Center in Biloxi, Mississippi.  Information about the conference can be obtained at www.msema.org/hurricaneconference.htm.

The 25th Annual National Hurricane Conference will also be conducted on April 14-18, 2003 in New Orleans, Louisiana.  This four-day conference is for public officials as well as private industry.  Sessions and workshops that are being conducted include: a hurricane planning course, debris management, donations management, and an emergency operations center course.  Registration cost for the conference is $300.  In addition to the conference, an exposition and an awards ceremony will also be held.  Additional information about the conference can be obtained at http://www.hurricanemeeting.com/.

The Governor's Hurricane Conference (June 11-13th) will be held at the Tampa (Florida) Conference Center.  The conference will be precipitated by two days of training sessions.  Last year’s sessions included “Hurricane Andrew – Lessons Learned” and “Florida’s New Building Code.”  This year’s sessions have not yet been announced.  The registration fee for the training sessions and the conference is $150.  Information is available at www.flghc.org.

Through the Emergency Management Institute, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) also conducts two resident courses pertaining to hurricanes.  IEMC/Hurricane: Preparedness and Response and IEMC/Hurricane: Recovery and Mitigation both place community and public leaders in hurricane simulations.  For these courses, the audience can be made up of members of various communities or all members from one community.  The Preparedness and Response course consists of classroom instruction and an evacuation exercise.  The Recovery and Mitigation course also consists of classroom instruction but includes an exercise focusing on recovering from a hurricane.  The both courses are four and a half days in length.  IEMC/Hurricane: Preparedness and Response will be conducted January 13-17 and March 24-28.  IEMC/Hurricane: Recovery and Mitigation will be conducted January 20-24 and March 31-April 4. Information about attending the EMI can be obtained at  http://training.fema.gov/.

Although not pertaining solely to hurricanes, Risk Management Solutions, Inc. is conducting its 2003 Client Conference entitled “New Perspectives on Catastrophic Risk.”  Scheduled for February 10-13, this conference is focused upon the modeling of disasters.  Titles of conference sessions include “New Perspectives on U.S. Hurricane Risk”, “Modeling Hurricane Windfields” and “Hurricane Storm Surge.”  The conference will include a “demo Room” where participants can receive interactive demonstrations of modeling software.  Further information can be obtained at www.rms.com/2003 clientconference.welcome.asp.
