Disaster Resource Guide
By Bob Mellinger
The Disaster Resource Guide is an annual publication that focuses on business continuity planning, disaster recovery and emergency management. According to Kathy Gannon Rainey, Publisher, “The Guide was born out of a desire to assist in times of need and to reduce, through preparation and mitigation, the intensity of that need.” (DJG 2002, page 8). The 2002 release is currently available with the 2003 issue slated for general distribution during the first quarter of 2003. The publishers also provide access to the Guide on the web at www.disaster-resource.com The 2002 Disaster Resource Guide opens with a letter from the Publisher then provides a collection of Executive Summaries, What’s New and Meet the Pros (a directory of industry professionals). The Guide is then broken up into the following sections: Planning & Management, Human Concerns, Information Technology & Telecommunications, Facility Issues, Crisis Communications & Response, and a Directory of Products and Services. The first five sections contain a collection of articles specifically targeted to each of these topic areas. The Directory of Products and Services is divided up into series of categories and sub-categories like Alternate Sites, Awareness Programs, Restoration Services, etc. Each listing contains the organizations name, contact information and a description of their products and services. The directory is also available and searchable on the Guide’s web site. Of particular interest is the 2002 issue’s focus on the human element. According to Kathy Gannon Rainey, Publisher, “The bottom line must be about people…As emergency management and business continuity professionals, we are doing our jobs for people.” (DJG 2002, page 8). In the Executive Summary titled “Your Employees – Critical Asset or Expendable Commodity?” (DRG 2002, page 12) the author, Don Saracco Ed.D., states that “…you are probably not doing what is necessary to prevent and mitigate the threat to life and safety that are inherent in a world at war with terror.” Again, it’s all about people. The Guide is available for free by signing up on their web site, via a direct response card contained in the any iteration of the Guide or by contacting the Disaster Resource Guide directly.
