Disaster Recovery Journal By David Ostwind
The Disaster Recovery Journal (DRJ) is a professional journal dedicated to the business continuity community. Founded in 1987 by Richard L. Arnold, the journal has increased from 22 pages with a distribution of 3,000 readers to 100 pages and a distribution of more than 60,000 subscribers. (DRJ Website, About the DRJ) Like other professional journals, advertisements and articles in the DRJ focus on issues pertinent to those employed in the business continuity field. The journal is published quarterly and is free to business continuity professionals in the United States and Canada. In addition to the published journal, the DRJ also offers numerous products and services; many of which can be located on its website at www.drj.com. Of significance are the DRJ’s two annual conferences, which are identified by DRJ as the largest conferences in the Business Continuity Planning (BCP) industry. (DRJ website, Fall World 2004) Held in San Diego California, the four-day conferences cover the latest BCP issues and offer attendees numerous opportunities to network with other professionals in their field. In addition to the BCP conferences the DRJ website also offers other products, including, books, videos and subscriptions to the DRJ online database. The online database appears to be a useful research tool as it contains 450 articles published in the journal over the last thirteen years. (DRJ, DRJ Online) Topics available on the website include such generic subjects as earthquakes, fire and flooding to BCP specific topics, including, alternative sites, data processing recovery, disaster response plan awareness, media relations, PC based software, restoration and risk analysis. (DRJ, DRJ Online) The DRJ website also offers many useful links and services. These links and services include the following: BCP Chat, Small Business Center, Business Continuity Planning Model, Sample BCP Plans, an Industry Resource Center, News Briefs, Career Classifieds, Salary Survey and Job Descriptions. For those looking for jobs in the BCP field, the Career Classifieds, Salary Survey and Job Descriptions links are excellent resources. The Career Classifieds link lists numerous job openings and services provided by BCP placement firms. The Salary Survey identifies salary trends in the BCP field, average salaries for each professional accreditation as well as average salaries by state. The job description link describes each BCP job, the major duties associated with the position, required knowledge and skills and educational requirements. As the business continuity field continues to grow, the combination of print material, website resources and national conferences will likely make the Disaster Recovery Journal an excellent resource for BCP professionals both now and in the future.
