Here are some options for your term paper:· (1) Original research/idea: Formulate the problem and the solution approach and motivate it. Discuss how it differs from the "solutions" covered in class (you have 24 presentations to compare with!).
· (2) Synthesis of a solution: Synthesize a solution from the techniques covered in class, and discuss how/why your solution will be better than the prior work (as defined in the 24 presentations in class).
· (3) Big picture question -- how to build a trusted system (within a trust level?) from untrusted components. This is a tricky problem to explore, so tread very carefully.
Of the above, Option (2) is probably the most well-defined and 'safest'. Format of the term paper: I do not expect you to write tens of pages for the paper. Rather, you are expected to be concise and precise. I do not need long introductions and definitions; instead focus on the problem you are solving, clearly explain your suggested solution, and provide a justification for why you think your solution will work. You should aim for at least 5 pages and at most 10 pages -- 12 point, double spaced.
Term paper presentation: You will be required to present your ideas (term paper) to the entire class and "defend" it. This must be a targetted presentation -- i.e., no background, intro etc.; start with a slide that presents the problem you are solving, and then describe your solution. Plan on a 15 minute presentation followed by 10 minutes of questions/defense!
